Making Museums Matter

Nina Simon has a well earned and hard won reputation as a passionate and unabashed "museum activist" on the international stage – and a rather successful one. Primarily, Nina Simon has been an advocate for community participation in museum programming in a 21st Century context.

Recently she presented a talk at a TEDx Conference [TEDx link] where she shared her experiences at Santa Cruz's Museum of Art & History and the story of how the MAH transformed the institution into a thriving cultural center by opening it up to its community

Furthermore, by collaborating with diverse groups, celebrating the uniqueness and 'placedness' of Santa Cruz, the museum both invited and honoured the participation of all its visitors. Accordingly, MAH has been able to increase its visitor numbers in a spectacular way through more dynamic participatory programing. It now offers a reference model for museums wishing to improve their standing in their community.

What's more to the point, MAH is now financially sustainable, and consequently more successful by any measure. The link to the 15 minute video below is well worth the time to watch it as Nina talks about the ways her museum members managed to turn the institution around (financially & culturally) and what worked. Clearly, what Nina Simon has to say has a wider application in other institutions beyond her own that are seeking to succeed in a 21st Century context.
A graph from the video that demonstrates MAH's current success

Nina Simon is the Executive Director of The Museum of Art & History @ McPherson Center in Santa Cruz, California. Prior to joining the MAH, 2008-2011, Nina ran a design firm called Museum 2.0 that worked with cultural institutions worldwide on audience participation. She also maintains the Museum 2.0 blogfocusing on ways that museums can integrate social networks, user-focused design, and etc. into our institutions ... click here to read more on Nina

Nina is also the author of "The Participatory Museum" a book that is gaining international currency a standard text of a kind in 'musueology'. Nina also presented "Discourse in the Blogosphere: What Museums Can Learn from Web 2.0." Museums and Social Issues

The VISUALlanguage of Sarah Illenberger

It is worth being in touch with the work of Berlin artist Sarah Illenberger, who has long made them smile here at Trendland with her humorous and insightful perspective, seen in concise visual forms. Working at the intersection of 3D design, photography, set design, styling and illustration, Illenberger speaks in images, often memorable and conceptual. Sarah Illenberger is the first monograph of the artist’s work, featuring commissions by clients such as Vanity Fair and Wallpaper, as well as a selection of personal projects. For more insight into Sarah’s work and process, be sure to get her great book, and check out the video on the Trendland Listing!

The Albanian-born artist Anri Sala (b. 1974) works with film. He is aware of the influence of music on people, and he draws on this frequently in his work ... click here to read more

THE NEW REALITY: Augmented Reality Exhibitions

This entry really really should have been called (SMARTphones + DUMBbureaucrats = ART ... guerrilla style)but maybe that would be a bit long and too much in your face. However, it is important to say that this is NOT NEW but there you go. Nonetheless, it does look a lot like the FUTURE and the future in all its manifestations looks pretty interesting!

"Sander Veenhof and Mark Skwarek cordially invite you [well they did] to the "WeARinMoMA" exhibition in the MoMA NY, featuring augmented reality art in its proper context: a contemporary art museum. At the same time, the 'art invasion' annex exhibition showcases the radical new possibilies and implications Augmented Reality is bringing to the cultural and creative field ... PS  The MoMA is not involved yet" ... and it seems it still isn't but they do have a BLOG CLICK HERE

CLICK HERE TO GO TO EXPLORE THE IDEA & WATCH THE VIDEO
"The virtual exhibition will occupy the space inside the MoMA building using Augmented Reality technology. The show will not be visible to regular visitors of the MoMA, but those who are using a mobile phone application called"Layar Augmented Reality browser" on their iPhone or Android smartphones, will see numerous additional works on each of the floors." ... FOR MORE PLEASE CLICK HERE
CLICK HERE TO VISIT THE MELBOURNE MUSEUM VIRTUALLY
There is no need for VIRTUALexhibitions to be 'nurdy & techno' as the technology to do something really simply is available and very accessible. Once you get past the notion that everything in a museum is not sacrosanct and accept that it is NOT ILLEGAL to take photographs, rather make images, in a  museum you are on your way ... for more on that click here

CULTURALLY RELEVANT PERFORMANCES: Garage Sales

Click here to go to source

How Are We Performing Today? This is a Museum of Modern Art NY project examines the "shifting conditions and rising popularity of performance-related art, and its evolving—and frequently ambivalent—relationship to the museum". It draws upon the double meaning attached to 'performance':
  1. The live element in the arts – current cultural production;  and
  2. The benchmarking for economic productivity and thus relevance.
MoMA's conference is very much to do with understanding the "character and consequences of new performance formats and strategies used by artists, curators, and institutions"

Notably, it explores how performance is "tied to the experience economy—in which memory itself is a product—and how it is framed institutionally"

Importantly via this conference is engaging with its Community of Ownership and Interest around the world and is asking questions like:
  • "Where and under what conditions does performance art emerge today?
  • How can artists and institutions address performance's migration from the margin to the center of contemporary art discourse?
  • What kinds of transformations or conditions might be necessary to create a meaningful or critically engaged performance art program within the museum?"
Interestingly, in doing all this the flip side of 'performance's' double meaning comes into play given that MoMA is deepening its engagement with current theory and practice relevant to 'current cultural production'reflecting on  changing paradigms, parameters, modes of production, and presentation.AND all the while the institution is being  'entrepreneurial'  and in a multidimensional way.

ART WORDS

• "the viewer is persuaded by his senses that he occupies the centre of the world around him - a world he changes at will as he moves through it" Rudolph Arnheim Art Theorist 1988

• “the only thing that is not art is inattention.” Marcel Duchamp '

• we don't see things as they are, we see them as we are.' Anaïs Nin

•  ‘i think all my works, my actions, have no meaning outside what they are. so if you think it's significant, then it's significant.’ Richard Long

•  'in the end, the creative act is not performed by the artist at all: the spectator brings art to life and thus fulfills the work on the spot.' Detroit Mona - The Jane Show

•  'I think both art and life are a matter of life and death.' Walter de Maria

•  'art is art. everything else is everything else.' Ad Reinhardt

•  'you can only express in words what words are capable of expressing, what language can communicate. painting has nothing to do with that.' Gerhard Richter

MUSEUM & SOCIAL NETWORK

Click here to visit the blog
Auckland Museum is a standout institution both within New Zealand, the Pacific and internationally. A few years back in 2010 the museum was in trouble but right now they have a right to a claim to be amongst the leaders of the pack in their field. When they were refurbishing their museum the staff ran a blog to keep their community informed and engaged – they unknowingly were setting the pace that other are yet to catch up with. The BLOG has grown up to become a dynamic part of the institutions public face and the starting point for all kinds of community activity.

Congratulations all round!

Apps & iPads Invoke Change

CLICK HERE TO GO TO SOURCE

Stay in touch with developments of interest to YOU wherever you are – at home, on the road, wherever.

The paradigm of the 'iPad App' is a newish way to get to publications – magazines, museums, news networks – content. Musers can browse news about exhibitions, publications, research and other events from the leading, commentators, international museums, art centers, foundations, biennials and art journals, plus read current and past commentaries. The iPad App offers us the added functionality to search, store, and share developments, journal essays, exhibition announcements and more still.

Information is going viral in the 'New Paradigm' we find ourselves in and the signals are telling us to "join in or eat our dust". The “Only Thing We Have to Fear Is Fear Itself”, FDR’s First Inaugural Address March 4 1933 at the deepest depths of the Great Depression somehow has a resonance here – change or have change imposed from around us.

The Cure For Greed

CLICK ON THE IMAGE TO ENLARGE
Whether we like to admit it or not, greed is one human emotion we all will face at some point. Conceptual artist Diddo has used this observation as the premise for his latest work, “The Cure For Greed”. Using an intricate chemical separation process, the artist extracted and recovered pigment from $10,000 of US currency, individually dosed at 5ml in crimp-sealed medical vials, and paired it with an injection kit, complete with a 24-karat gold syringe, two gold plated needles and packaged into custom monogrammed mahogany or walnut box.  Watch the amazing video, and see what Diddo had to say about the project... click here

MONA: The Proactive Museum

click here to go to source
It's no surprise at all to see that MONA is operating OUTside the square. The 'enterprise' continually sets new standards and points to new paradigms. If one is looking for an exemplar of leadership in a 21st Century 'museum' context, or for that matter any context, then perhaps one needs to look no further for a little while yet.

100 years of John Cage, Wednesday Sept 5

Musical Alaska: 100 years of John Cage
Alaska Projects
L2, Kings Cross Car Park, 9A Elizabeth Bay Road

Undeniably one of the most influential characters in 20th century music and art, John Cage once said, “I can't understand why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones.

But nearly 100 years to the day that Cage was born, Sydney zine World’s Only is set to present a tribute to the past ideas of the venerable American composer. From his infamous 4”33’ of silence, to the use of chance procedures and Eastern mythology in composition, Cage continually provoked and challenged audiences, often with tongue firmly in cheek.

The free afternoon concert will be a celebration of the music, art and philosophy of Cage’s 80 year career, performed by young and emerging Sydney musicians including World’s Only editor and Broadsheet contributor Megan Clune, emerging conductor Hoshimi Sakai, musician and director of Serial Space Tom Smith, ABC Young Performer Award finalist Som Howie and many more.
